Sporty Prius still in its Prime among hybrid vehicles

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- I have a history with the Toyota Prius ... one loaded with good memories.

At the dawn of the 21st century, the Prius convinced me and many others that this gas-electric hybrid thing was going to work out just fine.

Next thing you know, I was writing about monster-size sales of the vehicle.

One of the most memorable rides of my life was in a Prius generation two, with motoring legend Denise McCluggage at the wheel.

A recent week in a 2024 Toyota Prius Prime SE only added to my memory list.  Let me count the ways ...

While some did not like the 2023 body styling change, I loved it.  The Prius was transformed from a boxy suburban dweller to a super sporty-looking highway flyer. To this day, many are shocked to learn that the hot sports car they parked next to is a Prius.

And the power package backs up the look nicely.

On the tester, the standard 2-liter, four-cylinder engine was ably backed by a plug-in hybrid system, the combo churning out a max 220 horsepower.  The tester zipped along with Corvette-like intensity, and the perfectly tuned balance made for a secure feeling behind the wheel.

The old story is that Prius motorists drive it like they stole the vehicle.  With the Prius Prime, that feeling is doubled. And it's a guilt-free blast.

Of course, the payoff is exceptional fuel mileage -- a combined 52 miles per gallon with the gas-fueled system handling the heavy lifting.

Some reviewers have complained about the comfort level, but I had no such problems.  Volunteer passengers were likewise complaint-free.

A generous helping of standard features did little damage to the wallet.  I was genuinely surprised to find the sticker's bottom line reading (a most reasonable) $34,434.

Given everything, the current Prius still excites at a high level ... and looks good doing it.

Popular Pilot sport-utility vehicle is back in Black

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- It's not always easy being the popular one.  Case in point: the Honda Pilot sport-utility vehicle.

The midsize crossover SUV has long been popular among California vehicle buyers.  And yes, you can see a bunch of these sport-utes during a typical outing on the road.

But being popular, there's constant pressure to make things better, and heaven forbid, not mess up a good thing (look up Ford Taurus' radical body style change from years ago).

Happily, Honda has added a Black Edition pilot to its 2025 fleet, and it retains virtually everything that has made the Pilot a Golden State favorite.

For the uninitiated, a Black Edition features "exclusive exterior and interior styling enhancements that distinguish it from the rest of the Pilot family." Or in other words, Black Edition touches make a Honda look hot and stylish in a contemporary way.

At first glance, the Black Edition Pilot looks born to ride the off-road trails.  My tester, a 2025 Honda Pilot AWD Black Edition, looked trail-ready even in its head-turning "Radiant Red" paint job.

I should point out here that the Black Edition is the most expensive of nine trim levels of the vehicle, starting at $54,280. And while that's a fair amount of coin, a glance at the standard features list justifies the fare.

My tester was loaded up with leather, a heated steering wheel, tri-zone climate control, vehicle stability assist, 20-inch alloy wheels in gloss black, a head-up display, three-row curtain airbags and ... well, I could go on all night.  Rest assured that you're getting a lot for your 50-grand.

Fuel mileage is fair at 19 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the open road.

I found the Pilot to be an easy, smooth cruiser, with a more-than-willing 3.5-liter V-6 (285 horsepower) handling the chores. Honda notes that it's the most powerful three-row sport-ute in its history.

Volunteer passengers also commented on the smooth ride ... and a surprising amount of room among three rows in a midsize machine.

Overall, I'd say this Black Edition will not result in the Pilot losing out in any popularity contests.

These three sport-utes help make the season bright

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- Christmas season is here, and it's time to get things in order. Here's a trifecta of recently driven sport-utility vehicles, all of them appropriate gifts for the fortunate motorist:

+ 2025 Mazda CX-50 2.5 Turbo Premium (pictured): The compact sport-utility vehicle is a reasonably-priced ride amid Mazda's impressive lineup of SUVs. Mine was loaded, stickered at $43,170 and rated at 23 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

The lengthy list of standard features included leather seating surfaces, paddle shifters and a 10.25-inch color center display. The big screen was easy to read, and useful in many functions.

The CX-50 can be had as a fuel-efficient hybrid, but I savored the 2.5-liter turbo engine on the tester, rated at 227 horsepower.  This power plant turns the compact into a competitor.

The tester zipped around city streets and freeway stretches with aggressive, agile moves.

Fun to drive. A strong entry in a very crowded motor vehicle segment.

+ 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe XRT 2.5T AWD: I've liked the Santa Fe for years, and I have some long-standing friends who feel the same way -- friends who bought their Santa Fe sport-utes upon my recommendation.

I had another 2.5-liter turbo power plant at my command in the Santa Fe, and yes, I again enjoyed the seat-pressing boost it provided.

Generously equipped with standard perks, my tester came in at $43,205 and was rated at 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Hyundai touts the "next-level 3-row Santa Fe for next-level adventures." Nice way to put it, and I have to agree.  Bonus: World-class warranties.

+ 2024 Kia EV9 Land AWD (EV9 Long Range AWD): Previous outings in the EV9 convinced me that this particular vehicle ranks as one of the most sophisticated among the current electric vehicle offerings.

My tester wore a sticker of $74,230, but that included state-of-the-art electric tech; top-tier safety comfort, convenience features; and a fuel-equivalent rating of 91 mpg in the city and 75 mpg on the highway.

You say it's priced like a Mercedes-Benz? Darn right.  Because it's that good.

Latest MX-5 a worthy successor to 'Mazda Miata Mania'

This review first appeared in the October 2024 edition of the Cruisin' News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

To subscribe to the Cruisin' News, visit www.cruisinnews.com, call (916) 933-0949 or send an email request to subscribe@cruisinnews.com.  Mailed requests for information should be sent to Cruisin' News, P.O. Box G, Virginia City, NV 89440.

Sacramento, California --I well remember "Mazda Miata Mania" back in 1989, when otherwise intelligent, thoughtful adults lusted for the newly introduced sports car like youngsters craving a Cabbage Patch Kid on Christmas morning.

Some totally hooked motorists offered to pay twice the sticker price for the little beauty. Others shamelessly begged and slobbered for a mere test drive.

Times have charged -- well, sort of -- but the appeal remains the same.  The little MX-5 is perhaps the ultimate guilty pleasure motoring toy.  Fun to be seen in. Fun to drive.

My week in the tested 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Grand Touring produced a flood of memories -- all of them good.  Just scooting the thing around the neighborhood had me laughing out loud. What a pleasure!

It's not a Corvette-type of thing either. The 2-liter, four-cylinder engine packs a max 181 horsepower, but in this small package, you feel like you're blazing through the Bus Stop chicane on the Watkins Glen road course in New York.

And with the MX-5's super-low stance, you have the feeling that you're stuck to the pavement, just gliding on top of it at heart-racing speed.  A rush? Absolutely.

And all these years later, the MX-5 still turns heads.

Curious folks approached me in parking lots and in my front yard, asking for details.  I was only too happy to talk up the sporty car's charms.

While you feel every road imperfection driving the MX-5, the tester was extremely well balanced.  It was rock-solid on corners taken a high speed. Steering response was excellent.

It looks racy just standing still. It has a few cosmetic tweaks: Exterior changes for 2024 include new LED lighting elements.

But the MX-5 is not stuck in the 1990s.  The current version has been upgraded with numerous contemporary technology features, including blind-spot monitoring (a must riding this low to the pavement on freeways) and rear cross traffic alert.

Fuel mileage is an impressive 26 miles per gallon in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

The bottom line on the tester's sticker was $39,895.

Modern amenities aside, the appeal remains the same as it was all those years ago.  You can have fun in the sun, a blast on the open road and a take self-satisfying journey just cruising this roadster through your neighborhood.

The MX-5 Miata remains what it was from the beginning: a good-time car that always delivers a good-time drive.

This Toyota sport-ute wears Corolla name with pride

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- OK, if you're going to put "Corolla" -- a name that equates to millions of motor vehicle sales over a long period of time -- on the vehicle, you better be doing something right.

Fortunately, Toyota does a lot of things right with this compact sport-ute.  My recent week in the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross HV Nightshade radiated quality inside and out ... all for a very reasonable price of $34,498.

Toyota really jumped in with both feet on this Nightshade concept, a motif dripping with black.  Black components include badging, roof racks, mirrors, alloy wheels ... You get the idea.  Even the Toyota promotion photos emphasize the theme, with the Corolla Cross emerging from a creepy-looking fog in the night.

SUV as a secret agent?  Yeah, I'm on board.

Beyond the Nightshade optics, there are plentiful perks in the SUV.  Fit and finish are excellent. Interior roominess is surprisingly good in this segment. Standard features are state of the art and generous. Loved the color: "Barcelona Red Metallic."

Toyota touts the Corolla Cross as having the functionality of a larger crossover, and I have to agree.  I put it through a series of suburban loading/transport chores and found the vehicle capable of matching all that I could throw at it.

Looking for good numbers at the gas pump?  The tester weighed in at 45 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.  Given everything, including hybrid technology, I thought the sticker price was a bargain.  Auto-reviewing colleagues of mine have said the same.

Oh, almost forgot: it drives like a dream.

The 2-liter, four-cylinder hybrid engine is quiet, efficient and fairly peppy when my right foot asked for more. The power package feels a touch stronger than the advertised 150 horses.

Overall, this Corolla Cross in a black dress is a must-test-drive among those looking for a versatile SUV not costing $50,000 and up.

Hyundai's Tucson SUV is refreshed to please in 2025

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- I've driven numerous Hyundai Tucsons over the years.  I've even recommended the compact crossover sport-utility vehicle to friends who were seeking my advice on a just-right vehicle for their needs.

But I'd have to say that the recently tested 2025 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited AWD is the best version of the brand that I've ever driven.

Hyundai happily touts its "thoroughly refreshed" Tucson for 2025.  I would agree, but more to the point, the fresh parts add to an already excellent package, with a starting price of just a few bucks less than $41,000 on the tested model.

Yes, I like the sporty look, with some stylish side sculpting and the smooth muscled front end. Eye-catching alloy wheels add to the look.

Inside, there's a surprising amount of space for adults who might otherwise wonder about taking a long trip in a compact crossover.

Power comes from a 1.6-liter turbo-4 rated at 178 horsepower.  The hybrid components produce a healthy 35 miles per gallon in both city and highway driving.  Accelerations were robust. Agility was impressive, especially in dicey freeway driving.

I was somewhat blown away at the number of comfort/convenience/safety features packed into this small SUV.  I particularly liked the easy-to-read 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

For 2025, Hyundai added its Forward Attention Warning system, which employs an infrared camera mounted on the steering column to help track the driver's gaze and assess alertness.  If the driver is found completely unresponsive, the system can bring the vehicle to a stop, activating hazard lights and the electronic parking brake.

Overall, the vehicle has all the appeal of one priced at $60,000.  And this is where Hyundai has made its mark in a little more than a generation: Solid engineering, numerous standard features, for an entirely reasonable price.

This 2025 Tucson Hybrid Limited checks all of those boxes.

Powerful Dodge Hornet crossover brings the sting

This review first appeared in the September 2024 edition of the Cruisin' News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- Dodge set out to build a hybrid Hornet with some sting, and the mission was completed with a high level of success in my judgment.

How else to explain the smile on my face during my week in the (deep breath now) 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T Plus Track Pack and Blacktop EAWD?

That's a way-too-long way to describe the crossover with a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder, turbo, PHEV engine rated at 288 horsepower and 383 foot-pounds of torque.

Oh, by the way, the combined fuel city/highway mileage equivalent comes to 77 miles per gallon when gas teams up with electricity.  Gas only gets you a still-healthy 29 mpg in city/highway motoring.

But let's talk about horsepower.

Yes, this is a performance crossover, but the power is not dished up in a slap-in-the-face manner.  I found accelerations to be robust, yet smooth ... and I was not driven to deafness by the sounds coming from the engine.

On the R/T, there's an on-demand "PowerShot" feature that adds a burst of 30 horses. That enables you to make the 0-to-60 mph trip in 5.6 seconds.

In other words, this SUV is a fun blast to drive, and you can't help but put it through its maximum-performance paces when you're behind the wheel.

The tester was stuffed with features that pushed the sticker's bottom line to $54,325.  I was happy to sample the menu since I was not writing a check for the vehicle.

Standard equipment included a primo Harman Kardon audio system, adaptive speed control, pedestrian/cyclist emergency braking, a power sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated front seats and much more.

A "Track Pack" and "Blacktop Bundle" of options included sporty styling touches (loved the hornet badge on my ride) and other enhancements, including dual-mode suspension.

The suspension was expertly tuned.  The agile tester felt completely under my control even during hard accelerations from a standing start.

All in all, this Hornet is a perfect match for a motorist who likes a generous helping of thrill-ride performance with their utility and functionality needs.

Honda's Ridgeline pickup stands tall among the rest

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- Looking back, it's remarkable to consider how Honda has carved itself a major portion of the automobile market pie in California.

Its passenger cars and sport-utility vehicles have filled Golden State roadways over just a couple of generations.  The names are familiar to all: Civic, Corolla, Pilot CR-V.

And yet, often overlooked in the Honda story is its capable pickup -- the midsize Ridgeline. For 2024, Honda added a rugged trim level, which I recently tested: the 2024 Honda Ridgeline AWD TrailSport.

Rest assured that it upholds Honda's standards for fit, finish and engineering ... and is a muscular off-road-leaning warrior to boot. The base price is $44,980, just about right (and actually, a bit of a bargain) in today's competitive pickup segment.

Power comes from s 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated at 280 horsepower. On trail and highway, performance is solid for all conditions.  And the truck can be set to manage surfaces as well, including dirt, sand, mud, rocks and snow.

The TrailSport edition is aimed at the motorist who doesn't mind getting his/her pickup dirty, and maybe even dinged. The pickup is equipped with an off-road tuned suspension and underbody protection designed to shield its oil pan from sharp rocks and other off-road hazards. All-terrain tires are also part of the package.

While Honda touts the pickup's appeal to "youthful weekend adventurers," I found the Ridgeline to be a comfortable, enjoyable vehicle for the extended road trip.  The rugged exterior package is set off by an extensive list of in-cabin comfort and convenience features, plus state-of-the-art safety technology.

Bonus: Max five-star federal government safety ratings, including the overall score.  Fuel mileage is fair at 18 miles per gallon in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

Overall: The Ridgeline might get lost in the shouting for Ford, Chevy and Ram pickups, but this TrailSport deserves its day in the sun -- on road and off.

This rip-roaring Ranger Raptor rules the roadways

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- Want a pickup that can blow off most everything on the highway these days?

Ford has you covered with the introduction of the 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor.  I recently had a week in the SuperCrew 4X4 version of the midsize truck.  Can't remember a time when I had more fun driving a pickup.

Naturally, the rumble from the 3-liter, twin-turbo V-6 was a big part of that.  With 405 horses under the hood and 430 foot-pounds of torque to work with, the Ranger is the Big Boss in its class.

The acceleration power in the Ranger Raptor is actually somewhat intimidating.  While being pressed deep into the driver's seat, I was wondering: How did they pack this much punch into this package.  After a short time, I stopped pondering such things and simply savored the experience of putting the hot rod pickup anywhere I wanted at any given time.

The Ranger Raptor's suspension is tuned in such a way that it feels nothing like a typical pickup.  In fact, eventually, I stopped thinking of it as a pickup.  It's just a performance machine, with universal appeal.

I was enjoying the Raptor as a paved road warrior, but Ford relentlessly touts its off-road appeal.  Ford writers were staying up late, coming up with lines saying that the pickup was ready to "dominate the dirt" and ready "to take off-road capability to the next level among midsize trucks."

Yeah, pretty much mission accomplished on those fronts.

Yet inside, the beast has comforting charms. My ride was dressed up with a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, a digital instrument cluster, a 12-inch center touchscreen (easy to master) and dual-zone climate control.

Styling is not hot rod, but very much truck-like ... classically rugged fits perfectly.

All the perks brought the bottom line on the tested truck to a somewhat hefty $59,045. But I'm guessing that performance/truck fans will happily pay up, and enjoy every minute of their purchase.

BMW's sleek "SAC" combines best of two segments

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace.

Sacramento, California -- Nothing more embarrassing for the automotive journalist than taking delivery of a motor vehicle ... and not knowing exactly what it is.

Take the recently tested 2024 BMW X2 xDrive28i, for example. To my eye, it looked a lot like a sedan. No, wait, it's a sport-utility vehicle, right?

BMW weighs in by calling the X2 a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC), which blows the minds of folks who like precise vehicle definitions.

Fortunately, I'm not quite that obsessed. For 2024, BMW built this compact crossover sport-ute with diverse customer needs in mind.  And it all works, for $52,745 on the tested vehicle.

I liked the looks of the X2 xDrive28i from the beginning.  Sleek and, yes, sedan-like.  The double-panel BMW grille is not overstated, and the back end has enough sculpted chop to make it a sporty number. The long hood and roof lines make the vehicle appear bigger than reality.

BMW throws technology fastballs at an intimidating pace, and I did have to consult the owner's manual on some of the featured safety/security/comfort/convenience items.  But once mastered, I found all of the tech perks helpful.

Perhaps most significant among everything in the vehicle: the 2024 X2 is nearly eight inches longer than its predecessor, which translates to more interior comfort for five human beings.

Performance was enjoyable, courtesy of a twin-power turbo-4 engine making 241 horsepower between 4,500 and 6,500 revolutions per minute. The X2 makes the zero-to-60-mph trip in just 6.2 seconds.

Fuel mileage is pretty fair at 24 miles per gallon in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

For my money, this BMW appeals to a wide-ranging audience: luxury lovers, performance people, sedan devotees and SUV fans who like just a little cargo-carrying room. I'm guessing all will feel at home in this driving machine.

Kia's EV9 is a sophisticated, and fun, electric vehicle

This review first appeared in the August 2024 edition of the Cruisin' News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- Kia, once a builder of cheap cars, now produces one of the most sophisticated electric vehicles on the market.

It's the three-row EV9.  My tester, the 2024 EV9 GT-Line AWD, gave me plenty of reasons to smile.

Where to start?

It looked good, riding on 21-inch alloy wheels and with sharp, angular cuts in the body and window frames.  My ride was enhanced by an attractive "Ocean Blue" paint job.

Power was certainly plentiful, courtesy of dual electric motors rated at 379 horsepower and a whopping 516 foot-pounds of torque. I felt only a bit guilty zipping the big sport-ute around in traffic, hustling into tight spots on the freeway and dusting off speeders when I came blazing down on-ramps.

Then there was the 99.8 kWh battery with 300 miles of all-electric range.

And there was the full suite of state-of-the-art safety/driver-assistance technology, including a crash-avoidance system.

Fuel savings?  Naturally: an 80 miles per gallon equivalent rating in combined city/highway driving.

Did I mention the full-recliner seats?  No, I'm serious.  Just power up the leg rests and relax.

The EV9 does the basics well, of course. You get 82 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row, and 5,000 pounds of towing capacity.

In sum, I'm not sure I've ever driven a vehicle that offers so much right off the truck, besides the fact that it's all-electric.

Frankly, this EV9 competes well with anything currently being produced in the luxury/SUV/EV class.  And it's appropriately priced for that: $78,430 on the tester's bottom line.

Given all this, the prospective buyer has some things to consider.  We are on the verge of the all-electric car age, but not quite there.

So, yes, you could buy an EV9 and consider trading it in within a few short years, betting that even more EV technology will be developed for a cheaper price.  Or you could buy an EV9 for the long term, knowing that the market is leaning ever-more into the electric realm, and with the knowledge that you have a sophisticated, and fun to drive, head start on the future.

I tend to think that the latter option is the way to go.

Ascent SUV has all of Subaru's standards, and more

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- Subaru has a reputation: all-wheel drive masters, boxer engines, styling and safety.

They're wrapped up to the max in a three-row SUV I recently sampled. All the strengths of Subaru were on display in the 2024 Subaru Ascent Onyx Edition Limited, priced at $48,140.

With a surprisingly spacious interior, top-tier federal crash test scores (including a maximum five stars in overall safety) and an enthusiastic power plant, I was immediately impressed with the vehicle's ability to feel right at home off-road or on the highway ... or in the crowded urban jungle.

Power comes from a 2.4-liter turbo boxer engine rated at 260 horsepower and paired with a seamless continuously variable transmission that also features an eight-speed manual mode.

Gears can be selected, if desired, via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Need some help off the beaten path?  The Ascent gives you an able assist with the latest off-road technology, including hill descent control and a traction management system.

Twenty-inch wheels and a nearly 9-inch ground clearance also make one feel secure in off-road operations.

While it can tackle the rustic roads, the tested Ascent featured numerous luxury-level features.  Those included a power panoramic moonroof, a Harman Kardon audio system, leather surfaces, LED headlights with high-beam assist and tri-zone climate control.

If you want to haul plentiful supplies in your travels, the Ascent's towing capacity is rated at 5,000 pounds.

Please note that the Ascent trim levels include versions starting at substantially less than $40,000.

All in all, the Ascent is a remarkably versatile machine with all the best hallmarks of the Subaru brand.

Buick's little Encore GX competes among the big boys

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- I'm driving down the road, and that catchy jingle from the 1960s is playing in my head: "Wouldn't you really rather have a Buick ... "

What prompted that?

It was my time in the 2025 Buick Encore GX Avenir AWD, a subcompact sport-utility vehicle with enough room for five.

Best part of the experience: A nicely equipped model starting at $31,500. Next best part: Everything was easy to understand and use, from the on-board clock to the helpful safety/security technology.

Given the ultra-competitive world of small SUVs with widely varying prices, my ride seemed like a nice, comfortable break in a calm universe.

Power on the tester came from a nifty 1.3-liter, three-cylinder turbo engine that was more than powerful enough to power the little sport-ute around.  On the freeway, amid the slicing and dicing mob, I felt completely comfortable with the power supplied by the engine.  And the Encore GX was sure-footed in heavy traffic.

Fuel mileage was pretty fair at 26 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

The exterior look on the tester was classic compact sport-ute, but the front end had a little extra dash with nicely placed chrome accents.

The tester also included a generous helping of standard features, given the affordable price.  That included LED lighting, leather surfaces and an 11-inch, easy-to-see-and-use center dash display.

In the blizzard of small SUVs out there, it seems to me that this Buick would draw the interest of motorists who don't want to carry $50,000 to the dealership, plus those who crave utility for modest chores and family road trips of varying lengths.

I'm guessing those folks just might rather have a Buick.

Reworked Tacoma pickup draws attention, praise

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- I'm not a daily pickup driver, and generally speaking, I don't get overly excited about a bumper-to-bumper reworking of a midsize truck.

But it's hard to ignore the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma, star of a Super Bowl ad and winner of assorted "best buy" nods since then.

After a week in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4X4 Double Cab, I confess that I now understand the hype.  It's not just hype.  It's a genuine triumph.

Let's count the ways on my tester: a muscular 2.4-liter turbo-4 engine, an off-road tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks, a decidedly roomy bed for a midsize truck, crawl control, automatic high beams, road sign assist/recognition, a full boat of contemporary off-road equipment/systems and much more.

Sure, a generous package of optional equipment pushed the bottom line on my ride to $54,784, but knowing that most pickup buyers make their purchases for the long haul, it's worth the price.

All of this would be impressive as is, but the reworked Tacoma is offered in more than a half dozen trims.  And you get perks -- a turbocharged engine, most significantly -- across the board. Impressive? I should say so.

Getting down to basics, the Tacoma was a pleasure to drive.  Uncomplicated, feisty when needed and pleasantly quiet on the freeway.  I found the turning radius to be surprisingly compact for this vehicle segment, and the various equipment and conversion processes for off-road jaunts were quite easy to master.

Simply put, this is a "freshening" of your dreams, the way an extensive model reworking should be done.

Perhaps the biggest compliment I can offer: the new Tacoma is equally at home at the work site or on the town.

New CX-70 fits nicely in Mazda's sport-ute lineup

Mark Glover’s AutoGlo car reviews can be seen here and in the Cruisin’ News, "Oregon, Nevada and California's classic auto news & marketplace."

Sacramento, California -- Something new from Mazda reveals a luxurious, feature-loaded, high-performing sport-utility vehicle.

And yet in the tested vehicle -- a 2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus -- all my volunteer passengers wanted to talk about was the exterior paint job.

OK, it was a head-turner.  They wanted to call it Cinnamon.  The automaker calls it "Melting Copper Metallic."  You get the idea.

The CX-70 is positioned nicely amid Mazda's sport-utility vehicle offerings.  Call it a just-right choice for those wanting a five-passenger model with plentiful perks and the ability to get your heart racing during a hard acceleration from a standing start.

My tester performed flawlessly during a recent week in the California Wine Country, where it fit in perfectly among some of the classy, high-priced vehicles making the run over from the Bay Area.

So many things to like, but the performance topped my list.  I wondered how enthusiastic the CX-70 could be with those broad shoulders.  Turns out it was beyond enthusiastic with the 3.3-liter, six-cylinder, PHEV power plant churning out a maximum 323 horsepower and 369 foot-pounds of torque.

If asked, the CX-70 would sprint like a cheetah.  If you wanted to merely dust off pokes, it did so in a relatively quiet, efficient manner.

Since I was in Wine Country, I returned to the Sacramento Valley with more than I took over, but the spacious interior of the CX-70 swallowed all of it with no problem.

Fuel mileage? If you combine electric and gasoline, you can wring a 56 miles-per-gallon equivalent out of the power plant.

Did I mention luxury?  Plenty of that, including a power panoramic moonroof, heated power exterior lamps with built-in turn signals, a sparkling 12.3-inch color center display screen, black Nappa leather and a full boat of state-of-the-art safety/security systems.  My vehicle was priced about right for all that: $59,275.

All in all, another strong SUV choice from Mazda, joining a fleet of superbly engineered models.

Black beauty: Range Rover could be Batman's SUV

Sacramento, California --Built like a tank, with a "Santorini Black" paint job and ebony interior, the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Dynamic SE could be the sport-utility vehicle of Batman's dreams.

And priced at $104,655, it falls into the income bracket of Bruce Wayne.

Alas, it was mine for a week.  And let me tell you, I was the center of attention wherever I went.

Riding on 21-inch alloy wheels and spreading those broad shoulders, the tester was the very picture of intimidating menace. Not that I was minding that, I'll have you know.

When I was closing down on freeway stragglers, they typically darted out my way when they saw me coming.  You don't get that in a Honda Civic.

Given its size and fuel mileage readings of 19 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, I figured the Range Rover would be a lumbering load on the open road.

I figured wrong.

The 3-liter, six-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged engine (395 horsepower) produced startling leaps off the line.  And I was able to sprint the tester in and out of tight spots like it was a lightweight sports car.

Very impressive engineering, that.  And perfect fit and finish across the board.

Land Rover touts its luxury chops, and the tested Range Rover was loaded up with a sparkling package.

On the safety side, the beyond-the-norm list included emergency braking aids, roll stability control, adaptive cruise control with steering assist, 3D Surround Camera System and a sophisticated emergency collision system.

Human comfort/convenience perks included a power tailgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, Windsor Leather surfaces and a panoramic sliding roof with power sunblind.

Volunteer passengers raved about roominess and comfort inside the cabin. I darn near had to drag them out of the vehicle.

Little wonder that Land Rover competes strongly with high-recognition luxury automakers.

This latest-generation Land Rover has plenty to boast about in the marketplace.
